Not unlimited custom development

The weakest model for a firm like ours would be unlimited one-off custom development billed by the hour. That's precisely the work AI commoditizes fastest, and it turns every engagement into a negotiation over the price of keystrokes. The stronger model is a combination of vertical product development and high-touch implementation: build a reusable core platform, configure it for each customer, add the integrations that customer genuinely needs, and stay to operate it.

This is the logic behind ATLAS. Rather than rebuilding a student information and operations platform from scratch for every school, we've built a domain model around how state-licensed, clock-hour education actually works — attendance, course hours, cohort scheduling, transcripts, student finance — and configure it to each institution. The accumulated domain knowledge becomes an asset, not a cost re-paid on every project.

How the work is priced

Turning AI-driven efficiency into margin and scalability — rather than letting it collapse into cheap hourly programming — means charging across several layers:

  • Discovery & implementation. Workflow analysis, configuration, data migration, and launch — the work of understanding the operation and standing the system up correctly.
  • Software subscription. Recurring access to the platform itself.
  • Managed support & maintenance. Monitoring, updates, security, and support — the ongoing accountability that a prototype can't provide.
  • Custom development. Optional fees for genuinely customer-specific capabilities that fall outside the core platform.

This structure does something important: it lets AI make us faster and leaner without handing all of that efficiency straight to the customer as a lower hourly rate. The savings show up as margin, as more senior involvement per engagement, and as the ability to profitably serve niches a larger consultancy would ignore.

Demo versus durable product

AI now lets almost anyone produce an impressive demonstration. The discipline that separates a demo from a system a business can run on is not glamorous, but it's the actual product: documented requirements, deliberate architecture, testing, source control, CI/CD, security reviews, monitoring, backup and recovery, and formal support. Those practices are where "enterprise discipline" stops being a slogan and becomes the reason a client's system still works — and is still maintainable — a year after launch.
